Homes, doors and locks in Long Island

Long Island has large post-war suburbs, beach houses and strip-mall businesses across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Common door hardware here includes cylinder deadbolts, knob and lever locksets, keypad and smart locks, and master-keyed systems in larger buildings.

Security, climate and access

Coastal salt air affects exterior hardware near the shore; seasonal homes often get rekeyed or fitted with keypads for caretakers.

A locksmith checks the door, frame and strike as well as the lock, because a good lock on a weak frame still fails.

Licensing and local rules

New York State has no statewide locksmith licence, but New York City requires locksmiths to be licensed by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP); under Local Law 183 of 2025 the individual licence is being replaced by a locksmith business licence from May 2027.

New York’s Multiple Dwelling Law section 51-c lets apartment tenants add their own lock to the entry door as long as they give the landlord a duplicate key on request.

Typical locksmith work in Long Island

Lockouts, rekeying, lock changes, deadbolt and smart-lock installs, master-key systems, car key and fob work, and safe opening for owners. Every door is different, so the lock is checked on site before any work is quoted.

Have photo ID and proof that you live at or own the property ready — a reputable locksmith will ask before opening a door, car or safe.
